Decreasing Regulatory Burden:

Is THAT Required?

Decreasing Regulatory Burden

New Orleans, LA

PRIM&R is partnering with American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) to offer a half-day post-Forum workshop as an addition to the 2019 ACLAM Forum. This workshop, "Decreasing Regulatory Burden: Is THAT Required?" will be moderated by F. Claire Hankenson and Nancy F. Marks. By staying on for the half-day event following the Forum, attendees will have an opportunity to explore in depth, in an interactive setting, timely topics relevant to the ACLAM community. More information about the workshop focus and speakers is below.

This educational session will further explore topics related to NIH efforts to decrease regulatory burden for PIs and the impact this has on our IACUCS, researchers and animal care staff. Three modules will comprise the morning of deep-dive discussions. We will delve into self-imposed burden created by the level of detail required by our IACUCs, including scientific merit review, compared to what the regulations require. Next, we will discuss use and availability of standard procedures, and end with an exploration of the self-imposed burden of three-year protocol expirations. Attendees will benefit from engaging in large- and small-group discussions with colleagues on these contemporary challenges for veterinarians in biomedical research.

Learning Objectives: The participants will gain a better understanding of self-imposed regulatory burdens and the impact they have on the IACUC and researchers. Colleagues will share their successes (or failures) in implementing these changes.
