Assessing and Mitigating Risk in SBER

Assessing and Mitigating Risk in SBER

Online

The risks associated with social, behavioral, and educational research (SBER) are often hard to identify, inconsistent, subjective, and unpredictable. Even the most experienced reviewers struggle with identifying and quantifying the potential harms. During this webinar, speakers will provide foundational knowledge and strategies for identifying, assessing, and mitigating SBER risks. Using illustrative case studies from diverse areas of SBER, speakers will discuss how SBER methods and context may exacerbate subject vulnerabilities, and suggest ways to tease out the risks these studies introduce. Once identified, they will explore practical application of common mitigation strategies, preparing attendees to carefully tailor guidance for researchers and IRBs.

Agenda

  • Brief overview of SBER: themes, strategies, and common research methodologies
  • Regulations and standards for assessing risk in research
  • Identifying risks in SBER: sources of risk vs. types of risk
  • Assessing risk level (minimal, greater than minimal, minor increase over minimal, etc.)
  • Evaluating whether risks are reasonable in relation to benefits
  • Strategies to mitigate risk through study design, informed consent, privacy measures, and more
  • Common challenges, pitfalls, and gray areas in SBER risk determination

What will I learn?

After attending this webinar, you will be able to:

  • Understand risk as defined in the regulations and as applied to SBER
  • Implement strategies for mitigating risk in SBER
  • Appreciate the complex nature of risk assessment and mitigation in SBER

Who should attend?

This basic-level webinar will benefit IRB professionals and members who are new to reviewing SBER as well as those seeking a refresher on core principles and practices.
